Unicef Conference: Business Tailor-made For Families

November 2019 Belgrade

Parents need time and support to give their children the best start in life and still be productive at work.

That was the main starting point of the conference aimed to set new frameworks and support family- friendly policies in work environment. The conference was organized by the UNICEF Serbia and supported by the Ministry of Culture and Information.

The main topics of the conference were baby friendly business culture, the position of fathers in the maternity leave, and subsequently in raising a child. Entrepreneurs in Serbia are increasingly recognizing the importance and the benefits of family-friendly policies. Investing in those policies will help improve workforce productivity, and companies will be able to attract, motivate and retain employees more effectively. Well-drafted support policies increase women's participation in the workforce, economically empower families, enhance children's skills, encourage job creation, reduce inequality and poverty in society, as well as gender imbalances and stereotypes about the role of women and men in raising a child.

"BioSense Institute fights the brain drain not only with high wages, but also with various incentive measures for young parents, such as flexible working hours and assistance with buying an apartment etc.”, Vesna stated at the conference, adding that such business practices also attract Serbian scientists who work abroad to return to Serbia, because it is important for them to be near to their families.

The Science Foo Camp

The Science Foo Camp, also known as “Sci Foo”, is a series of interdisciplinary scientific conferences organized by O’Reilly Media, Digital Science, Nature Publishing Group and Google Inc. The event is based on the spirit and format of Foo Camp, focused on emerging technologies. It was specifically designed to stimulate the collaboration between scientists who would not typically work together. The Sci Foo conference is particularly interesting in three ways; it is invitation-only, the invitees come from many different areas of scientific expertise and the meeting has no fixed agenda; the invited scientists, technologists and policy makers create the conference program on the spot based on their shared professional interests and enthusiasm.

Dr Ivana Gadjanski, researcher from BioSense was invited to participate in the SciFoo Camp 2019. All the participants had the chance to propose a topic for the Lightning talks. Ivana's talk „Biosensors and Lab-grown meat “was selected among 200 applications and she received great feedback. She also introduced the ANTARES project to the attendees. This kind of networking is generally important for spreading scientific excellence, exploring research frontiers, and making solid foundations for gainful cooperation.
