Sofija Stefanović

Prof. dr. Sofija Stefanović is a physical anthropologist with more than 20 years of research and teaching experience in human osteology and bioarcheology. Sofija obtained her Bachelor in Archaeology (1995) and MA (2001) and PhD (2006) in Physical Anthropology from University of Belgrade. She supervised around 30 of undergraduate and 7 PhD students, and authored more than 40 journal papers and three books. Her current research in the field of prehistoric bioarcheology is devoted to investigating the ancient biosystems in order to understand the phenomena relevant for the modern populations-e.g. the study of fertility. She is the first scientist from Serbia who was funded by the European Research Council (ERC), for her BIRTH project which investigates prehistoric fertility and how humans survived despite the difficulties accompanying birthing process.
